John Mark in the New Testament is traditionally believed to refer to the Valley of St. Mark. The Catholic Church regards him as a saint, known as St. John Mark. But this is still disputed among the ancient fathers, for example in the writings of the Bishop of Rome, St. Hippery, Saint Paul is identified as three different characters from John Paul Paul and Barnaber’s relative, Marco. According to Saint Hipperi, the three Markoes belonged to the seventy disciples Jesus sent to Judea as missionaries. It follows that when Jesus explained that his body was “truly edible” and that his blood was “truly drinkable”, many of the disciples left him, and perhaps Mark was among them. Church tradition and documentation

Nineteen years after the Ascension, Mark arrived in Alexandria and founded the Church of Alexandria. Mark became the first bishop of Alexandria and is revered as the founder of the Christian Church in Africa. Mark’s episcopacy was succeeded by St. Annianus in Nero’s eighth year, probably because of Mark’s martyrdom. But later Copts traditionally say Marco was martyred in ’68. Mark is believed to be the boy who dropped his clothes and fled naked on the night of Jesus’ arrest in Gethsemane. The Coptic Orthodox Church identified St. Mark as the same person as John Mark and recounted the presence of the disciples in Mark’s House after Jesus’ crucifixion and the appearance of the resurrected Jesus in Mark’s home. Also at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to the disciples at Mark’s house. Marco is even thought to be one of the waiters at the wedding reception in Ghana.
