Catherine of Alexandria is a Christian saint and virgin

Catherine of Alexandria, a Christian saint and virgin, was martyred by Emperor Maxentius at the beginning of the 4th century. According to her biography, she is both a princess and a famous scholar. She became a Christian around the age of 14, converted hundreds of people to Christianity, and died at the age of 18. After more than 1100 years of Catherine’s martyrdom, Joan of Arc recognized her as one of the saints who appeared to her and advised her. The Orthodox Church honored her as a great martyr and celebrated her festival on November 24 or 25 according to local traditions. In Catholicism, Catherine is traditionally honored as one of the fourteen saints, and she was commemorated in Roman martyrdom on November 25. Her feast was deleted from the Universal Roman Calendar in 1969, but was restored to an optional commemoration in 2002. Some modern scholars believe that the legend of Catherine is probably based on the life and death of Saint Dorothea of Alexandria and Greek philosopher Hippatia, who is the opposite role of Christianity and neo Platonism. Nowadays, the Catherine of Alexandria sculpture is popula with many people.

The story about Catherine of Alexandria

The emperor ordered a terrible torture of the saint, and then put her in prison. During her confinement, she was fed by a pigeon from heaven every day. Christ also visited her, encouraged her to fight bravely, and promised her the crown of eternal glory. Angel medicated her wound with ointment. During her imprisonment, more than 200 people came to see her, including Valeria Maximira, wife of Maxentius. All people converted to Christianity and later died. Twelve days later, when the dungeon was opened, the bright light and fragrant perfume filled it, and Catherine appeared, more radiant and more beautiful. As Maxentius failed to bend Catherine through torture, he tried to win the beautiful and wise princess by proposing. Catherine refused and claimed that her spouse was Jesus Christ, and that she had dedicated her virginity to her. The angry emperor sentenced Catherine to die on the broken wheel with thorns, but it broke under her touch. Maxentius ordered her beheaded. Catherine herself ordered the execution to begin. What flowed from her neck was not blood, but a milk like substance… You can have a look at this Catherine of Alexandria sculpture.
