Because he did not believe the word of Christ or the evidence he had seen with his own eyes, he had been known as Thomas doubting. Yet, despite being stigmatized by church doctrine as an unbelieving saint, Thomas seems to me to offer a positive example of someone who rejects what he sees as the original evidence.

The sculpture of Christ and St.Thomas broke new ground
Everyone agrees that Verrocchio’s life-size bronze depictions of Christ and St.Thomas broke new ground. St. Thomas is touching the risen Christ’s wounds and saying “Lord, I believe”. Placing the suspicious apostle outside a sculptural niche on the wall of a Florentine guildhall, Verrocchio introduced a sense of dynamic movement into sculpture for the first time since ancient times. Thomas points and faces the niche, breaking the mold. Art fellowships in the mid-20th century celebrated innovation as an end in itself, another step in the development of European art toward the illusion of baroque Hollywood.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Duccio di Buoninsegna painted the same scene as Christ in front of a niche just big enough for the Lord. Duccio is actually “painting” Christ while dipping his finger into the wound like a brush in paint. Blood brings Duccio’s paintings to life. It is understood that even those who know little about art can understand that Christ will stand in the niche designed for him, ‘Duccio as Thomas’.
