church lectern

Religious Hand Caving Popular Decoration Marble Church Lectern

The lectern, originally a pedestal-based reading table with a sloping top, was used to support liturgical books, such as bibles, missals, and prayer books in religious services. Later, a stand could support the speaker’s books and notes. In early Christian times, the dais was incorporated into the structure of the sanctuary — one on the north side of the choir for the reading of letters and another on the south side for the reading of the Gospel. Take a look at our church lectern sculpture. This is a lectern platform carved out of marble. The lectern is a wonderful church ornament.

The lectern is part of the main body of the church

The rise of monasticism, with its more complex rituals and heavier prayer books, stimulated the need for mobile dais that could be moved around the sanctuary as needed. The church lectern is usually made of stone, though occasionally of metal, but it can be used for elaborate decorative treatments. In the late Middle Ages, this desk-like structure was largely replaced by an eagle with outstretched wings on its back providing support for a book. Since then, this type of lectern has remained popular in the church community. As the Reformation favored congregation-oriented services, the church lectern was moved to the main body of the church. The Gothic revival stimulated the production of the dais in the 19th century, when they were often used to decorate home interiors. A modern secular lectern is usually a tall, narrow table with a sloping top and a ledge that can hold a dictionary, book, or other documents while the user stands reading or lecturing.

Church Lectern

Church Lectern

In Christianity, the church lectern is the most common church decoration

In Christian churches, the lectern is usually a stand where the Bible is placed and “lessons” are read during services. Depending on the liturgical traditions of the community, these lessons may be read or recited by priests, deacons, priests, or laymen. A lectern is usually set in front of a bench so that the reader or speaker can face the congregation. The podium is usually made of wood. They can be fixed in place or portable. A lectern is different from a pulpit, which is used for preaching. Churches that have both a podium and a pulpit usually place them on opposite sides. The lectern is usually smaller than the pulpit, and both may be decorated in ceremonial season colors. If you need a church lectern sculpture.
