Christus is a Carrara marble resurrection of Jesus designed in the 19th century

Christus is a Carrara marble statue of the resurrected Jesus designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen in the 19th century. It is located in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Our Lady of Copenhagen, Denmark. It was commissioned for the church as part of a larger group that included the apostles. It was widely copied, and in the 20th century, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) adopted images and copies of the statue to emphasize the centrality of Jesus Christ in Church teaching. When the Church of Our Lady of Copenhagen was rebuilt after it was destroyed by fire in September 1807, Torvalson was commissioned to create the statue of Jesus and the apostles and other furniture and decorative elements during the British Naval bombing of Copenhagen. Plaster casts were provided for the dedication of the cathedral, and the finished statue was replaced in 1833. Jesus is depicted with his hands outstretched, showing the wounds in the hands of His resurrected body. Take a look at our LDS Christus statue. In the 1950s, LDS Church apostle Stephen L. Richards purchased a 3.4-meter replica of Christ and presented it to church president David McKay. It moved to Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1966. A second Christus replica was made and displayed in the church pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The replicas are displayed “to help visitors understand that Latter-day Saints are Christians.” Since then, the church has made replicas of the statues and displayed them at a visitor center near Hamilton Temple in New Zealand. Replicas are also on display at the Church visitor Center on Mount Camorra in New York, near the Temple of Independence in Missouri, and the Italian Temple in Rome, where the Twelve Apostles of Thorvaldsen from Vor Frue Kirke are accompanied.
