Martin was regarded as the patron saint of France during his stay in the Third Republic of France

Martin was born in Pannonia and converted to Christianity when he was young. He served in the Roman cavalry in Gaul, but retired sometime before 361 AD. At that time, he became a disciple of Hillary in Poitiers and established a monastery in Ligue. In 371, he was consecrated as the bishop of Caesarodunum. As a bishop, he actively suppressed the remnants of Gaul Roman religion, but he opposed the violent persecution of the Priscillianist ascetic sect. Sulpicius Severus, a contemporary biographer of saints, recorded his life. Some of his travel records may have been inserted into his resume to verify the location of his early worship. He is most famous for splitting his cloak in two with his sword and giving half to a beggar in rags in the middle of winter. He became a famous stop on the road from the Holy Land of Tours to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. During the Franco Prussian War, his worship revived in French nationalism. Therefore, he was regarded as the patron saint of France during his stay in the Third Republic of France. So, the Martin the Merciful bronze sculpture is popular with many people.

The worship of Martin was widespread in the Middle Ages

The worship of Martin was widespread in the Middle Ages, especially in the area between the Loire and the Mann rivers. Le Roy Ladurie and Zysberg pointed out that the place names commemorating Martin are the most intensive. Venantius Fortunatus declared earlier: “Wherever Christ is known, Martin will be respected everywhere.” When Bishop Perpetuus took office in Tours in 461, the chapel on Martin’s tomb could no longer accommodate the crowds of pilgrims already attracted. Perpetuus built a larger cathedral, 38 meters (125 feet) long and 18 meters (59 feet) wide, with 120 columns. Martin’s body was brought to Tours from his humble chapel in the seclusion of Candes Saint Martin, and his sarcophagus was reburied behind the high altar of the new cathedral. A large block of marble above the tomb is a gift from Euflorius, the Bishop of Otan. The believers gathered behind the high altar can see it. Werner Jacobsen said that pilgrims camped in the atrium of the cathedral might also see it. Contrary to the usual arrangement, the atrium is located behind the church, close to the tomb in the apse, and can be seen through the window openings in the apse wall. Martin the Merciful bronze sculpture became one of the most popular church sculptures. Aongking also has more religious figure sculptures for you to choose from.
