The history of Maria in China
At the closing ceremony of the Chinese Bishops’ Conference in Shanghai in 1924, The First National Bishops’ Conference in China, The representative of the Chinese Pontificate, Archbishop Gang Hengyi, and all the Bishops in China consecrate the Virgin Mary of the Chinese people. In 1941, Pope Pius XII designated the holiday as an official day in the Catholic Liturgical calendar. In 1973, the Chinese Bishops’ Conference was approved by the Holy See to celebrate Mother’s Day (the second Sunday in May) with a vigil. During the Boxer rebellion, a large number of soldiers attacked dongle villages in Hebei province. The village is made up of a small group of Christians founded by Father Vincent. The Virgin Mary appears dressed in white, and a fiery rider chases the soldiers. Father Wu commissioned a painting of the Virgin Mary with a Christian child in a golden robe.
