Our Lady of Czestochowa statue shows the traditional composition known in Eastern Christian ICONS. The Virgin Mary is shown as “Hodegetria”. In it, the Virgin turns her attention away from her and points her right hand at Jesus, the source of salvation. In turn, the child reaches out his right hand to bless the audience while holding a Gospel in his left. The origin of the icon and the date of its formation are still debated among scholars. Part of the difficulty in dating the icon is that its original image was repainted after being badly damaged by robbers in 1430. The boards that supported the painting were broken and the image cut away. According to medieval chronicler Risinius, medieval restorers unfamiliar with this method of painting found that the paint they applied to the damaged area “just fell off the image”. Their solution was to erase the original image and redraw it on the original panel. The original features of the Orthodox icon were softened and the nose became more pointed.
