The history of Our Lady of Divine Providence
The title of “Mary, mother of Divine Providence” can often be traced back to her intervention at the Cana wedding. Christ’s first public miracle was partly due to his mother’s intercession. She helped to avoid an awkward situation for the newlyweds through her foresight and care. The Virgin of Providence is sometimes considered the queen of the house. The dedication to our Lady of Divine Providence originated in Italy and spread to France and Spain. Father Servite brought this spirit of devotion to Puerto Rico in the early 1850s. According to tradition, Philip Benizi prayed to Mary for help in providing food for his friar, and later found baskets of food at the Abbey gates. Our Lady of Providence was declared the patron saint of Puerto Rico by Pope Paul VI on November 19, 1969. Many Puerto Rican communities celebrate her holiday.
