Our Lady of Dublin statue originated in the Abbey of St Mary’s in Mary Street, Dublin
According to local legend, suggests that Our Lady of Dublin statue originated in the Abbey of St Mary’s in Mary Street, Dublin, which was dissolved in 1539 as part of Henry’s Reforms. The first concrete historical record dates back to a survey of the Catholic Church in Dublin in 1749, which referred to a statue in the Parish Church of St Mary’s Lane. The chapel was demolished in 1816 to make way for a new school, and no further mention was made of the statue until 1824 when it was discovered by Father John Spratt, a member of the Garmerot Order. Since 1915, the restored statue has been on display in a specially built shrine near the church’s chancel. The Festival of Our Lady in Dublin is celebrated on September 8.
