Our lady of Nazareth statue’s rescue of the king:

The old Portuguese chronicle states that the appearance of our Lady of Nazareth Statue took place in 1182 on the day of the ascension of the Holy Cross. Dom Fuas Roupinho, a knight and vassal of King Afonso Henriques, went hunting on foggy days. He was chasing a deer when he accidentally fell off a cliff into the sea and died. Our Lady Nazare stopped Dom Fuas Roupinho’s horse. The chasing horse grew upright on the edge of the cliff, and it looks like Dom Foyas will stay behind the deer until he dies. Dom Foias knew that not far to his left there was a cave with our Lady of Nazareth Statue in it, and Dom Foias immediately turned to the protection of Our Lady of Nazareth Statue. He was saved and a small “Memory chapel” (Ermida da Memoria) was built above the cave on Thanksgiving in honor of Our Lady of Nazareth Statue.

The monastery built for our lady of Nazareth statue:

According to a document found on hand, the Our Lady of Nazareth statue was worshipped in Early Christian times in Nazareth. When the heresy of iconoclasm began in Constantinople, and the heretics were destroying all the statues, a monk named Chirilaco took him to a monastery near Merida in Spain. In 714, when the Saracens invaded the Iberian Peninsula, King Rodrigo fled with the Germanoan friars to the Atlantic coast. They hid our Lady of Nazareth statue in a small cave near the coast of the site, which later became Nazareth until it was discovered by shepherds in 1179. After the Our Lady of Nazareth Statue miraculously saved dom Foaz’s life, the devotion to the Statue spread throughout the country and became a source of countless graces. In 1377 king Fernando ordered the construction of a church near the chapel, where the Our Lady of Nazareth Statue is now venerated.
