The establishment of our lady of Pompeii statue:
The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii is a Roman Catholic cathedral, temple, and chapel of our Lady of Pompeii Statue, commissioned by Bartolo Longo and located in Pompeii, Italy. It was the seat of the territorial administration of Pompeii.
Bartolo Longo began the restoration of a church that had fallen into disrepair in October 1873 and initiated a festival commemorating our Lady of Pompeii Statue. In 1875, Longo acquired a painting of the Our Lady of Pompeii Statue from a monastery in Naples and raised funds to restore the painting so that the Statue could be installed in the church. Miracles began to be reported and pilgrims began to flock to the church. Three hundred people in the area pledge a penny a month for the work. Bartolo Longo, encouraged by Bishop Giuseppe Formisano of Nola, began the construction of a larger church – the cornerstone was laid on May 8, 1876. The church was consecrated on May 7, 1891, by Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta, on behalf of Pope Leo.
Pope Benedict XVI presented his sixth golden rose to the Holy Land on October 19, 2008.
