The image of the good shepherd is the most common symbolic image of Christ found in early Christian art in the Roman Catacombs, when Christian images were not yet defined. The form of the image showing a young man with a lamb around his neck is directly borrowed from the older pagan Kriophoros and portable statuette cases, such as the most famous statue now in the Pio Cristiano Museum in Vatican City. It is impossible to say whether the image was originally created with Christian significance in mind. The image continued to be used for centuries after the legalization of Christianity in 313. Originally, it may not have been understood as an image of Jesus, but like other symbols used in early Christian art, it may in some cases have a shepherd representing a black horse, a popular 2nd century Work of Christian literature. By about the 5th century, however, the figure took on more of a traditional Christian image, as it had been developed by this time, and was endowed with a halo and ornately robe, as seen in the apse mosaics of the Church of Santi Cosma e Damiano in Rome, or in Ravenna. The figure of a good shepherd often includes a sheep on his shoulder, as in Lucan’s version of the Lost Sheep fable.
