Catherine chose the “Sisters of Mercy” to make the charity work a prominent feature of the Institute

Catherine McAuley was an Irish Catholic nun who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831. Women’s associations have always been associated with teaching, particularly in Ireland. While education was reserved primarily for members of the established Irish Church, the sisters taught Catholics and sometimes Protestants there. For three years, Catherine and her companions continued their work as lay women. Catherine McAuley never intended to establish a religious women’s community. Her original intention was to form an amateur team composed of Catholic social workers. In 1828, the Archbishop allowed the staff of the Institute to wear distinctive clothes and visit patients in public. The uniforms used were black dresses and cloaks of the same material, extending to belts, white collars, lace hats and veils – clothes now worn by congregational offices. In the same year, the Archbishop hoped that Miss Macaulay would choose a name that would make this small community widely known. She chose the “Sisters of Mercy” to make the charity work a prominent feature of the Institute. Nowadays, the blessing of the Mercy Sister statue Catherine is popular with many people.Blessing of the Mercy Sister Statue Catherine

Catherine established a religious institution

Catherine hoped that the members could combine the silence and prayer of the Galmero Society with the active work of charitable nuns. The status of the college is abnormal. The members are not bound by the oath and rules. However, the church at that time did not support amateur women’s groups working independently of the church structure. The main concern is the stability and continuity of the work of compassion carried out by women. If any
of them marry or lose interest, the poor and orphans they care for will be at a loss. Catherine’s pastor urged her to set up a religious institution. In September 1830, Catherine and two other women, Anna Maria Doyle and Elizabeth Harry, entered the probation period of the Sisters’ Association, formally preparing for women’s religious life. On December 12, 1831, they swore and returned to the House of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy believed that December 12, 1831 was the day on which they founded their religious group. Archbishop Daniel Murray helped Catherine Macaulay establish the Sisters of Mercy and claimed to be the first three members. Then he appointed the Abbot of Catherine… This blessing of the Mercy Sister statue Catherine is of great significance. Sister Catherine seems to be a modest and kind protector. She drew the child closer in comfort and gentle embrace, and instilled a sense of trust in exchange and sharing. These two characters are united in a bond that brings hope to the poor and needy, and at the same time, they portray Sister Catherine as a protector and social reformer.
