Often, when people talk about devotion to the mother of Jesus under a specific title, it is with a quality of Mary (the grieving mother, the Compassionate mother) or a vision of her (Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Guadalupe). The dedication to Mary, under the title Our Lady of the Snows, is one of the oldest dedications to our Lady of the snows. In her dream, Mary indicated to a wealthy childless Roman couple that she wanted a church to be built in her name and that the grounds of the church would be covered with snow. On a hot, sultry morning of August 5, Mount Esquelin was covered in snow. All of Rome proclaimed the summer snow a miracle, and in 358 AD a church was built on the mountain in honor of our Lady of the Snows.

Missionary dedication of our lady of the snows statue:

After many restorations and renovations, the church, which is now the magnificent Cathedral of Major St. Mary, remains today the site of piety to the Catholic Church of our Lady of the Snows. However, our Lady of the snows is honored here, not so much for the legend, but for her special role in the church, in its very nature, the missionary. Our Lady of the Snows missionary — the priest and the brotherhood that runs the temple — following the inspiration of its founder, St. Eugene de Mazenod — has been calling for Mary as their principal patron, She looked at the love of their Lady of the Snows in the same way she looked at their missionary work.
