The history of Santa Caterina D’alessandria

Santa Caterina D’alessandria is a Roman Catholic church, close to the Church of Alexandria. The church was built between 1725 and 1730 to replace an older building, which dates back to the middle of the 16th century and was damaged in the 1693 earthquake. Since its establishment in 1574, it has been the seat of the Brotherhood. The completion of the new building is due to the large amount of money donated by Pastor Giacinto Giglio, interim governor of the Brotherhood. The new seat was consecrated on October 6, 1730. Around the middle of the 18th century, the facade and bell tower were built. The marble altar was built between 1774 and 1792, while the marble mosaic floor was built around 1803 − 04. The building was damaged by British air strikes in the summer of 1943. It was repaired in the years after the war. The church was damaged again in the earthquakes of 1990 and 2002. Due to the restoration work funded by the Sicilian Civil Defense Department, it was reopened for worship. The church was worshipped by the saints Alphius, Philadelphus and Cyrinus.
