St Bridget of Sweden, a mystic and saint

St Bridget of Sweden, a mystic and saint, founded The Sisters of Bridget and Monks after the death of her husband of 20 years. Outside Sweden, she was also known as Princess Nericia, the mother of Catherine of Vadstena. Although often referred to as “Bridget Sweden,” she is not a member of the Swedish royal family. She is one of the six patron saints of Europe, along with Benedict of Nursia, Saint Cyril, and Methodius, Catherine of Siena, and Edith Stein. At the age of ten, Bridget had a vision of Jesus hanging on the cross. When she asked who had done this to him, he replied, “They despise me and reject my love for them.” St Bridget of Sweden was so impressed that from that moment on Christ’s suffering became central to her spiritual life.

The Revelations that St Bridget of Sweden received as a child have now become more frequent

The Revelations that St Bridget of Sweden received as a child have now become more frequent, and her account of these Revelations Coelestes was translated into Latin by The Linchpin Canon Matthias and her confessor Father Peter Olafson, alvstra’s predecessor, and gained great popularity in the Middle Ages. These Revelations have made Bridget a celebrity for some and a controversial figure for others. Her vision of the nativity had a huge impact on how it was portrayed in art. Shortly before her death, she described a vision that included the baby Jesus lying on the ground, himself glowing, and describing the Virgin As having blond hair. Many depictions follow this and reduce other light sources in the scene to emphasize the effect. During Baroque, nativity is still very commonly treated with chiaroscuro. Other frequently seen details, such as a candle “hanging on the wall” and the presence of the Heavenly Father above, also come from Brie’s strange visions.
