Philomena is a young virgin martyr

Philomena was a young virgin martyr whose body was found in Priscilla’s catacombs from May 24 to 25, 1802. The inscription Pax Tecum Filumena (“Peace be with you, Philomena”) is inscribed on the three tiles around the tomb. Philomena is the patron saint of infants, infants and young people, and is called “miracle worker”. In 1805, the body was moved to Mugnano del Cardinale. There, they became the focus of extensive dedication. Many miracles were attributed to the mediation of Philomena, including the recovery of Pauline Jaricot in 1835, which was widely publicized. From 1837 to 1961, the celebration of her ceremonial feast was approved in some places, but it was never included in the universal Roman calendar. How did people discovery her remains?

On May 24, 1802, a small room with an inscription was found in the Priscilla underground tomb of Via Salaria Nova, and it was carefully examined and opened the next day. The chamber is closed with three clay bricks, with the following inscription: lumena paxte cumfi. It is generally believed that the tiles were not placed in the order of words, and the inscription was originally written in this way. The leftmost tile is placed on the right: pax tecum Filumena. A female skeleton between the ages of 13 and 15 was found in the room. Embedded in the cement is a small glass bottle with traces of blood on it. According to the hypothesis at that time, the body was considered to be the body of a virgin martyr named Philomena. In 1863, people still believed that these vials were the symbols of the martyrs’ graves. At that time, a decree of the sacrament on December 10 confirmed a decree of April 10, 1868. But since the investigation, this view has been rejected in practice. In 1805, Canon Francesco De Lucia of Mugnano del Cardinale asked for the remains of his speech, and obtained the remains found in May 1802 (turned into dust and debris) on June 8. These relics arrived in Muniano on August 10 and were placed in the Church of Notre Dame of Grace. A new church of Notre Dame of Grace was built, including a chapel. On September 29, 1805, the sacred objects were removed. In 1827, Pope Leo XII gave three terra-cotta tablets with inscriptions taken from the tomb to the church of Mugnano del Cardinale.
